Stories on how twisted the human mind can be has always been a topic of interest to me. I recently came across this book through a suggestion from a list i recently came across. And it was rather an interesting choice as well.
The story revolves around Amanda who lives a normal life with her husband. She has all a woman can expect - a good job, a good husband, own house and the love and happiness surrounding them. But then shortly she starts to hear sounds in the piping of the house and starts to believe that it might be a monster of some sort trying to enter the house. She also starts to have these hallucinations of childhood imaginary friend and starts throwing anger tantrums and starts to go out and drink, make out with men and fighting with the husband. Is she really getting possessed by demons or is it hallucination and how it affects Amanda's life is what 'Come Closer' is all about.
This is a quick read but it portrays well the fall of Amanda's life from being near perfect to total chaos. The author succeeds to some extend in building the tension around Amanda and keeping us hooked to the book. For readers of the genre, there might not be a suspense in the story. But it's ok. The story can keep you in jitters. The characters are minimal yet they are amply used. The length of the book is a major plus point. Elaborating the book might have spoiled it totally. There are some instances where we can really be confused on the state of Amanda's mind. I mean to say, whether the incident is happening for real or just playing out in Amanda's mind. Amanda's husband is well written which helps in building up the situation that brings tension between them. On the downside, as i told earlier, the usual readers of the genre might be able to predict the plot.
The book is a quick read which you can read in a single go. That being said the perspective in which the story is written sparks out interest in spite of the redundant plot. A very quick read for those who like thrillers and for those who like to explore the complexities of human mind.
