Ragdoll - Daniel Cole - Book Review

An interesting premise never fails to build an interest in me. The right genre ensures a must-pickup from the library. This was one such book.

Detective William Fawkes receives a call in the middle of the night from a crime scene. On reaching there, he finds that the body is sewn together like a puppet with the body parts of six different victims. While the cops are baffled, his ex-wife who is also a reporter receives a list of people who are going to be murdered by the killer. Guess what! William Fawkes is there at the end of the list. The police force races against time to prevent the body count from rising. Where the detective and the police force are able to track down the killer? Why is the name of Willaim Fawkes on the list? Does the body count continue to rise? forms the story.

The book was a quick read and the plotline was very interesting. But I could not get the right mindset to read. The flow of the read got broken in many places for me.  There were tense moments followed by a stale period. This was tiring for my patience. Towards the end, I felt the plot was predictable. The characters were good in their own respect. Detectives, Fawkes and Baxter were twisted in their own ways. Fawkes had anger issues and I felt that his character was not properly brought about. It is understandable that there has to be an element of mystery to the character as he is an important character in the book but I felt his characterization was rather inconsistent in some places. Baxter had her own issues which were well shown. Their chemistry was wobbly and always confused me throughout. The antagonist comes into play only toward the end, but the buildup that was created actually cools down towards the end. The ending seemed a bit too easy. I had the same problem with "The Chain" as well. One character whom I really enjoyed reading was Edmunds. His passion for the job and way of deduction was very interesting. There was a subtle humour that was underlying throughout the story.

A good and quick read but not quite engaging thoroughly. Set your expectations to a medium and you will end up liking the book.
