The Housemaid - Freida McFadden - Book Review

At times, we chance to read up on books that had strong word-of-mouth opinions. Recently, I heard good reviews regarding this book from a couple of my friends. They had told me that the suspense was so good. Me being a sucker for thrillers definitely had to read this up before anyone breaks the story to me.

Millie has been recently out of prison after a long sentence and Is trying to get her life on track. She had petty jobs which she could not sustain for long. One day, she chances upon an interview with Nina, who hires her as a cook and housemaid. She hides the fact  She could also move into Nina's house where she lives with her husband and child. Even though the husband seemed a nice person, the child seemed rude and Nina seemed totally unpredictable. Millie is happy to get paid and live in a big house. But little did she realize what was in store for her. What seemed like a simple job suddenly turned out to be a complete shocker. What transcribes, what happens to Millie, Is Nina and her family as perfect as they seem forms the rest of the book.

First of all, this was a very quick read. I was able to finish this in a day. The writing was easy going and it did keep the tempo engaging enough. There were very few characters and ample space was provided to all. The characters of Millie and Nina were interesting and the husband's character was explored more towards the end. It was interesting how Millie's backstory was unfurled towards the end along with the suspense which gave that extra pep to the story. Halfway through I got a faint idea of who was what but then how everything transpired was unexpected. I did really enjoy how everything was unfurled at the end. If we take off the suspense towards the end, this turns out to be a normal okayish read.

In short, for me, this was a good one-time read with a decent twist. Mystery fans will find this book an interesting one-time read.
