The Amityville Horror - Jay Anson - Book Review

There was a time when I was binge-watching horror movies. Back then, I remember watching a movie based on this book. Of course, I did not know about the book back then! It was recently while I was trying to rewatch the movie, did I get to know about the book.

As claimed in the book, this is a supposedly true story of the Lutz family who lived in this house for 28 days. The particular house in the story had a dark past. A family member had murdered five others within the family in this house with an ax. He claimed that there were voices that made him do that. The house was considered to be haunted. After this, the house was bought by the Lutz family who did not believe in all this. They ask a priest to bless their new home after moving in the things. The story follows the life of the Lutz family for the next 28 days before they move out. There is a parallel story following the experiences of the priest as well.

The read was very quick and at parts interesting. It is marketed as a true story and is described by the Lutz family to Jay Anson. The only fact that happened was the multiple murders that shook the nation back then. Since the story covers 28 days of the family in the house, the read does not slow you down and does not provide any dull moments. We may not know how credible the story is but the Lutz family moving out of the house and leaving all their furniture behind is a known fact. I liked how Jay Anson mentioned the changes at the house and how the resident's behavior was affected. The way the paranormal experiences of the family were described was engaging. The character of the priest was interesting to read. Since most of the story happens in the house, only a handful of characters appear in the book.

In short, a quick and passable read for horror lovers. I do not want to talk about the credibility of the experiences but it makes a decent enough one-time read.
