Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe - Benjamin Alire Sáenz - Book Review

"What a different name and a colorful cover!" was the first thought when I came across this book recently at the library. I had not read any reviews on the same and was under the notion of a story related to Aristotle and Dante. But boy! was I so wrong.

Two Mexican American friends, Aristotle Mendoza and Dante Quintana get acquainted at a local pool. Both of them start an unusual friendship. While Ari likes Dante's swimming, Dante is good with literature and poetry. One day they get involved in an accident and Ari is badly hurt trying to save Dante. This strengthens their bond and both the families get closer. Dante had to move to Chicago for two years due to his father's work. Yet they promise to remain friends. While Ari falls in love with a girl, Dante is struggling to find his sexuality. Meanwhile, Ari tries to find answers about his brother Bernardo who is in prison. Once Dante returns, he starts to have feelings for Ari. Does this affect their friendship? Does Ari reciprocate his feelings? form the remaining story.

This book was a very sweet and quick read. The language was simple enough but the underlying message was deep. Aristotle and Dante start off with strikingly different personalities. While Ari is silent, introverted, and of a complaining nature; Dante is bubbly and has a positive mindset. The way both of them find their true self is very beautifully and maturely depicted. There is an overall sense of positivity and tenderness in handling the story. I also loved the way parents were depicted and the chemistry between parents and children. The way parents took the decision of their children was really commendable and the author does a good job in driving the message home. I was wondering why there was the story of Bernardo in between

In short, a very smooth but mature read on relationships and uncovering the secrets of nature as rightly mentioned in the title. The ending of the story was really beautiful and this being my first LGBT read will remain one of the best reads in the genre.
