I am a fan of any book or web series which is in the thriller genre. One web series I came to know recently was Dexter. Never got a chance to watch it but was interested in the concept of the story. But during my recent library visit, I was able to lay my hands on the first book of the Dexter series.
Dexter is a normal lab technician working with Miami PD. He analyses blood splatters and other than that his life is uneventful. But is it really so? Behind the facade; there is another face. A serial killer's face who prowls with a different agenda. He goes after people on the wrong side of the law thereby quenching his thirst for murder and punishing the bad people as well. But recently; a new killer has come into his territory focusing on killing prostitutes. He has to find out the culprit before it can turn dangerous for him. The killer is almost perfect in his crimes posing a challenge to Dexter who was fascinated by the crimes. His foster sister working for the Miami PD is trying to dig to the bottom of this for her career growth. Will Dexter be able to control his killer instincts while the killer continues to taunt him? Does he uncover the real murderer and thereby help his sister? forms the remaining story.
I was really fascinated by the plotline - a serial killer trying to imbibe some ethics into the crime he does and the way he adores the new killer in the block secretly while trying to uncover him! Most of the characters in the book seem to be of grey shade rather than black or white. The lead character was written well and I really enjoyed the portion of his inner conversation and turmoils and how he tries to keep his cravings for murder under check. The lead investigator La Guerta was irritating to the core and the writer was successful in portraying her that way. The remaining handful of characters like Rita, Harry, Doakes, and Deb was well conceived and written. The writing was easy to read and I never foresaw the climax even though I came close to the big reveal. I liked the way the story made its way from the start to the end, especially toward the end.
In short, a good read which will definitely go well with thriller fans. Recently, I read in one of the news that a few murderers used the series, Dexter, to get ideas on how to get away with murder. This might be wrong getting all sorts of wrong inspirations from a work of fiction. But this book will surely be giving some serious chills and thrills to readers.
