The Lying Game - Ruth Ware - Book Review

There are some writers who really impress you at the first read and you end up expecting the same in all the subsequent books of theirs. Ruth Ware is one such author for me. After 'Turn of the Key' and 'The Death of Mrs. Westaway'; this one is my third read of Ruth Ware.

Isa gets a message from her friend Kate. So do her other friends Fathima and Thea. All three converge at Kate's place. Isa takes her infant as well. Kate's place is on a piece of land near the water which is slowly submerging into the swamps. A dead body has washed up in the shore nearby. Their school was nearby Kate's place. They had not quite good experiences in their school life where they does this lying game where in they lie all others except among themselves. The lies lead to many serious problems and these dark secrets are slowly making their way into their present lives. How Isa and her friends cope up with this forms the story.

The premise seemed interesting but with lesser characters in the act, the story was too predictable. Same with the twists. Most of them were too bland. The writing was simple but not as catchy as her other works. The book could have been a few pages shorter as there was a sense of drag throughout the read. Also, towards the second half, Isa did irritate me with her tipsy nature. The book started off as a thriller but somewhat ended up as a family drama.

In short, an okayish read marred by predictability and also the sense of drifting away. Another mediocre work from Ruth Ware.
