Treasure Island - R.L.Stevenson - Book Review

No matter how many books you read, there will be a special book in the minds of everyone who loves reading. For me, this book remains special. This has been my first serious read that pulled me into this wonderful world of books.

The story follows the adventures of a boy Jim Hawkins. His family runs the 'Admiral Benbow' Inn. One day a wary old soldier takes lodging in the inn. He is always on the lookout for someone. One day the soldier dies of poor health and Jim uncovers a treasure map of the infamous pirate Captain Flint. He sets on an adventure across the seas with Dr Livesey, Squire Trelawney, Captain Smollett and the crew on board the schooner Hispaniola. Unfortunately, some of the crew may not be what they seem. The rest of the story follows them on their adventures involving pirates, mutiny, rough seas, islands and treasures and whether they succeed in finding the treasure.

A great read. Even after so many re-reads, the story always stays fresh and exciting. The writing is simple but interesting enough to keep us hooked on the story. Plus the length of the book is perfect. There seems to be something happening at each juncture making the book so engaging. I guess, that is what makes me read this. The characters are also lively and engaging, and that prompts us to get involved as well. I always get a feeling of being in the book with Jim. I loved the way his character was written. Jim can be stubborn and has a stupid sort of bravery that you see in boys. Equally intriguing was Long John Silver and his parrot. The character with its dark shades makes a perfect antagonist. The other characters also were interesting especially Ben Gunn and Squire Trelawney. Plus the song that the pirates keep singing. The two lines still remain fresh in my mind.

This book is said to be one of the best coming-of-age books for boys. As a boy, this book paved the way for a long relationship with books. There have been innumerable movies based on the book and yet many movies inspired by this. I had seen a TV-made movie based on the book but do not quite remember that now. In short, a quick, adventurous read for kids and adults as well. Few books will have a special bond with every book lover. They would have made a major difference in their lives. For me, this is one such book that defined the reader that I am now.
