Keep It In The Family - John Marrs - Book Review

Most of my reads are based on the interesting premises I hear from others or blurbs that I come across behind the book. This was one such read. I found the premise quite interesting and set forth reading the same.

Married couple, Mia and Finn are trying to find a new house to start a family. They have been living with Finn's parents; who the now-pregnant Mia is having difficulty adjusting to. They come across a home and end up buying the house. While renovating the old house, Mia discovers a disturbing message that leads to the discovery of some gruesome discoveries that turn the home into "a house of horrors" overnight. Mia has a mishap but delivers a baby. Mia tries to dig up things and seek closure for what was discovered. But little does she know that the past is back to haunt them. What happens to the family? Will Mia be able to protect their family? Will the police be able to solve the case of the 'House of Horrors'? forms the story.

First of all, an interesting premise. I always like the spark of interest that the blurb of a book ignites. And most of the time, the reads were worth the pull. The premise was what pulled me into this book. The read was pacy enough for most of the read. But there were speedbreakers on the way throughout the book. There were only a handful of characters but they were interesting enough. Mia's character did irritate me in places. The most interesting character of the lot was Mia's father-in-law. Coming to the plotline, it was interesting enough but the suspense element did not work out except at the climax. I was able to guess the story before halfway into the book except for the climax. And I did like how the book ended.

In short, this is a good one-time read that might cater to mystery lovers. The climax twist sets a good ending and opens up the window for a second part.
